Product Description

In the Exo-Force storyline, humans are at war against robots that have malfunctioned and are now bent on total domination. The Gate Assault set comes with 402 pieces and a full-color, illustrated instruction booklet that diagrams construction of the robot attack tank in 13 steps, robot mech in 15 steps, the human mech in 16 steps, and the gate defenses in 20 steps with several ministeps along the way. The instructions also show images, though not diagrams, of alternate models Swift fighter and Blockade Bulldozer. This set comes with two human pilot minifigs and two Devastator robot pilot minifigs. Humans have spiky, anime-style hair that cover the back of their head and hides the fact that the head parts have two expressions to choose from: angry and berserk. Inside the box you'll find four gate pieces, four numbered part bags, sheet of 37 decals, and the instruction booklet. Numbered parts bags make it easier to build the set in stages since the numbers correspond to discreet sections of the building diagrams. Also included is an illustrated block inventory with part numbers, in case you ever need to re-order a replacement block. Parents should note that a blunt, rubber, spring-loaded missile shoots about five feet from the completed model. It's not enough to do anything but pretend damage, but in the wrong hands, it could be used to make a younger sibling cry. --Porter B. Hall

Ok, this set rocks. But only because I bought two other Exo-Force sets too. If I did not have the other sets, I'd give this two stars. I'd recommend, for the two ther sets you have to buy, the Stealth Hunter and the Fire Vulture. They're pretty cool, especially the Stealth Hunter. Once that set comes out on Amazon, you will see my review for it.

Pros:
+ Comes with 2 small mechs; one for each side (human and robot)
+ 5 minifigs in a set that's less than $30!
+ Really great alternate models (pseudo-instructions on the Lego website)

Cons:
- mechs are fairly similar to the standalone Uplink and Sentry (which don't have as many articulation points as the larger models)
- Minifig hair (rubber/plastic anime style hair) doesn't stay on the head very well

Overall:
+ Great "scenario" pack to play out a conflict between the two (that costs less than 1/3 of Sentai Mountain set)

This Lego has some neat components to it, but when trying to carry it from place to place, it tends to break up.
user comment LEGO Exo Force Gate Assault Don't let the robots through the gate!

Aside Bionicle, I haven't purchased any LEGOs in quite some time-- until EXO Force. The manga look at overall theme appeals to me. The Gate Assault here was my 8th and final EXO Force buy, completing the line until July. Aside the Sonic Phantom, this set is probably a resident shelf warmer at your local TRU.

The Gate Assault has 3 mobiles-- a land vehicle for the robots, a humanoid EXO mecha for the robots, an "air" humanoid EXO mecha for the humans, and then a gate to prevent the robots from breaking in to.

The robot land vehicle is a standard vehicle with nothing too exciting or flashy about it. It can hold 2 of the robots-- one to drive, and one to man the battling gun type turret built on top. It's a sturdy Lego vehicle, but like I said, nothing special.

The robot EXO mecha is an acceptable build. Although built similar to the #7711 Sentry or #7708 Uplink, it features dark red colors and nice armor designs. The shoulder, color, and arsenal are different from the other similar sets, however.

Same goes for the human's EXO mecha. It's another slighly similar build to the sets mentioned above, with the same differences, accept this one has some nice wing-like obtrusions, and a windshield. Both mecha have a cockpit to fit 1 minifigure.

The gate is a regular build, complete with a few turrets built into the sides and above the gate itself. There is a spring-loaded projecile that fires when the door is open (it has to hit the latch to fire) which makes it an inovative piece. But aside that, it is pretty dormant. It IS a wall, after all.

Every set in the EXO Force line includes a small sheet of decals with instructions on where to put them. Being a tad of a perfectionist, I spent a great deal of time trying to put them on flawlessly-- if you purchase this set for a little one, he or she may want your help. I personally like the challenge. Just don't fudge up, there are no extra decals.

I feel this set is a bit more expensive than for what you get. The main bread and butter of the line are the mecha, which go for about half the price of this. I have mixed reactions now that I've completed the line. Buy this if you're going to complete the line, or know why you want it. It's not a great example of the EXO Force line by itself, but can be fun with some of the other mecha.
